History
Historic Sites
Bath Hotel and Spring House
Built in 1778, the Bath Hotel was once a playground for
the rich and famous who came to Nevis to take in the therapeutic,
hot spring baths. Guests would come by ship from throughout
the West Indies and Europe for this pleasurable experience.
Unfortunately, due to damages from recent hurricanes and
other natural elements, the Spring House is closed. Recently
constructed is an open outdoor pool for people wishing to
experience the healing powers of the water.
Coconut Walk Estate
Down towards the sea from New River Estate, the ruins of
this early 18th century sugar works, kitchen and house are
an evocative reminder of the skill and strength of the early
free and slave craftsmen of Nevis. The tall, perfectly proportioned
windmill tower is one of the finest on Nevis.
Cottle Church
Opened in 1825, Cottle Church was the first Anglican Church
in the Caribbean where Blacks and Whites worshipped together,
10 years before slavery ended in the region. Created by
estate owner and slave holder Thomas Cottle, it was rebuilt
in the mid 1800's after earthquake damage, and fell out
of use by the early 1900's.
Cotton Ginnery
869-469-5521
The old stone cotton ginnery in Charlestown is located near
the ferry boat pier has been recently restored for shops
and a restaurant and since, is again bustling with activity
as it did in the days when growing cotton was a key island
industry. This was where cotton was ginned and packed into
bales before shipment to England. The complex now includes
a bookstore, local craftstore, clothing shops, a beauty
salon, other gift shops and a restaurant. At certain times
of year, community art and craft exhibits are held in the
ginnery.
Eden Brown Estate
Located in the countryside, about 30 minutes from Charlestown,
the Eden Brown Estate was originally a sugar plantation
. This substantial house was once called Eden Brown's Eden.
Built in the late 1700's, the house still commands spectacular
views over the sea, and on a clear day Antigua and Montserrat
can be seen from the Gallery. Legend goes that there was
a duel the night before Julia Higgins wedding in 1822, her
bethrothed survived but went on to marry another woman.
As the story goes, Julia spent the rest of her days as a
recluse in the house, and can still be heard today as she
wanders through the ruins.
Hamilton Estate
Just outside of Charlestown are the ruins of the Hamilton
Estate, a sugar plantation until the 1950's and owned by
the Hamilton family. Visit the ruins and enjoy the wonderful
views of Charlestown and St. Kitts from the hillside where
it is located. The ruins include foundations of a Great
House, Windmill, Cistern, and chimney, boiling house and
steam engine.
Jewish Cemetery and Jew’s Walk
The cemetery has tombstones that date back to the late 1700’s.
The small cemetery was established by the Jews who came
to Nevis to work in the sugar industry. The engraved tombstones
are written in English, Hebrew, and Portuguese, since these
were Sephardic Jews, who had come to Nevis from Brazil.
They came to the Island to introduce the technology of sugar
production to the island.
The Lime Kiln
Located at Huggins Bay, this early lime kiln is still used
to burn coral which washes up on nearby beaches to make
lime for the lime mortar essential to the construction of
the many stone buildings in Nevis. The kiln has been in
use for over 200 years, and has withstood many earthquakes
and hurricanes.
New River Estate
This was the last mill to produce sugar commercially on
Nevis. New River, with its massive machinery, elegant chimney,
ruined great house with volcanic stone colonnade and complete
sugar boiling wall offers the visitor a glimpse of the days
"when sugar was king".
Nevisian Heritage Village
The Nevisian Heritage Village depicts the evolution of Nevisian
social history through housing. The houses, dating from
the Carib Indian era, are replicas and are furnished with
antiques and relics of their relevant periods. The display
includes the blacksmith's shop, rum shop, and the shoe-maker's
shop, along with the dwelling houses. To complete this traditional
village setting are "backyard" gardens, beautiful
flower gardens and various species of indigenous plants
and shrubs some adorning the typical "estate yard"
ruins.
